How often to change the air filter?

You need to change the filter MORE than twice a year on an 1 inch filter. Should be changed every 4-6 weeks!
Also, stay with the basic "green 4/6" rating. Anything above that is hard on your equipment blower since it chokes on the air flow.. If you must to remove from the air, have your HVAC dealer add a 4" media filter system since that has a better air flow.
